As Chancellor Grant mentioned in her most recent update to campus, this semester we will begin a major renovation of Highsmith Union and construction of new student residences adjacent to Brown Hall. Preparatory work has begun on both projects, with construction expected to be fully underway by June.
This period of campus construction will have a significant impact on traffic patterns and parking on campus, as well as the location of several departments and campus resources. To ensure that everyone on campus is up-to-date with the latest information on these projects, we will email regular updates from this account. These updates will contain important information so please read them thoroughly.
You will also be able to find up-to-date information on construction projects and an archive of these communications at facilities.unca.edu/construction.
Work Affecting Campus in the Coming Weeks
On Wednesday of this week (Feb. 1) PSNC Energy will begin a major natural gas line relocation that is necessary as part of the upcoming construction projects. The work is expected to last approximately two weeks and will entail intermittent one-lane closures on Founders Drive. Parking will be blocked on the left-hand side of the road (P21) going uphill. We apologize for the short notice.
Also, toward the end of this week, Campus Operations staff will begin work relocating holly trees near Brown Hall in order to begin site preparations for new student housing. The trees are located along the northeast side of the building near the entrance to the admissions office and along University Heights in front of the designated admissions parking at P24 (maps.unca.edu). The trees will be relocated to enhance landscaping around Founders Hall. During this time, Campus Operations staff will also prune a pine tree on University Heights near Brown Hall in order to improve visibility of our admissions office.
In the coming weeks
Immediately following completion of the gas line relocation on Founders Drive, similar work will begin on University Heights resulting in intermittent one-lane road closures starting at the traffic circle on W.T. Weaver and working up University Heights to the three-way intersection at University Heights near the pollinator garden (G9 on maps.unca.edu). This work will continue until Spring Break begins on March 13.
During the week of Spring Break (3.13 – 3.17), there will be a one-lane road closure on University Heights and closure of on-road parking from Vance Hall to the three-way intersection at the top of the hill of University Heights. The entire lane will not be closed but rather a moving closure of sporadic areas. However it may be necessary to close all parking on one side of the road.
We will continue to communicate to campus as these projects proceed. Thank you for your patience and support as timelines may change.
